One of the biggest questions I get from buyers is “When should I tell my landlord I’m moving out?”

The short answer: not too early.

📄 Step 1: Check your lease
Most leases require 30–60 days’ written notice, and some have very specific rules about how notice must be given (email vs. written letter, exact dates, etc.). Always start there.

⏳ Step 2: Understand where you are in the buying process
It’s usually best to give notice after your purchase is well underway, not the moment you go under contract. Ideally:
Your offer has been accepted
Inspections are completed and any negotiations are resolved
Financing is approved and moving forward
You have a firm, realistic closing date.

Even smooth transactions can hit bumps, appraisal issues, loan delays, repairs, or closing date changes.

Giving notice too early could mean:
Scrambling for temporary housing
Paying for storage.

Closing before your lease ends gives you time to move without pressure.
