Charlotte is a flourishing community, nestled on the scenic hilly landscape along the Lake Champlain waterfront. Located to the south of Shelburne, the town of Charlotte is home to over 3,500 residents and hosts a distinct town center with a number of vital community buildings. Charlotte is located equal distance between Burlington and Middlebury, giving residents an abundance of options for dining and activities in either town. The town center features a public library, town offices, senior center, children’s’ center, fire department, and the convenient Old Brick Store. Whether it’s sugarbushes, orchards, berry farms, a winery, market gardens or honey houses, you can find it in Charlotte. The town of Charlotte is home to countless scenic landscapes, community trails, the Charlotte Park & Wildlife Refuge and Mt. Philo State Park. Charlotte’s beauty is open to visitors of all kinds, whether it's by bike, foot, boat, or rail.

Charlotte consists of 2 villages including East and West Charlotte. There is a ferry, operated by the Lake Champlain Transportation Company, that takes travelers to and from Charlotte, Vermont and Essex, New York. VT Route 7 passes through the town, with a commuter bus stopping at Ferry Road for transportation to Burlington.

Charlotte is apart of the Champlain Valley School District. Students attend Charlotte Central School until they start high school at Champlain Valley Union in Hinesburg.
