Vermont Lacrosse to Hold the Catamount Classic


The 2011 Catamount Classic - Lacrosse for a Cure is scheduled for Sunday, October 9. Sixteen Division I college lacrosse teams will face-off in scrimmages all-day on Thayer Academy's off-campus turf fields.

This year, eight women's teams will scrimmage throughout the morning starting at 8:00 a.m., while eight men's teams will take the field starting at 11:30 a.m. Event proceeds will support genitourinary and women's cancers research and care at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Dragon Boat Festival

The Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival is a day long celebration of community, camaraderie, and competition. Ninety teams -- that's about 2000 paddlers -- race 41 foot long dragon boats for fun, fitness, and fundraising.

Join the races. Anyone can do it. Hop aboard.

On top of all of the fun of Race Day, this event has the bonus of raising funds for cancer support right here in our community. All funds that are raised benefit Dragonheart Vermont, our breast cancer survivor and supporter programs, and our exciting new project called our Survivorship NOW Initiative.

Festival of Fools

Burlington City Arts is proud to present the Festival of Fools, now in its fourth year, on August 5-7th, 2011. The Festival of Fools is a curated festival of street theater devoted to community engagement through the celebration of circus arts, music and comedy for family audiences. In accord with Burlington City Arts’ mission to make the arts accessible in greater Burlington, the Festival of Fools offers free events, open to the public and appropriate for all age groups.

The Festival of Fools features the best international street performers from around the globe. Four main stage locations surrounding the Church Street Marketplace and City Hall Park will feature continuous street theater, performing to over 10,000 visitors to Church Street each day. The Festival wraps up on Sunday, August 7th with a grand finale featuring all the performers of the festival.

Discover Jazz Festival

Jazz on the Marketplace is one of the centerpieces of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival. Throughout the Festival, over 40 school, local and regional bands play on two stages along the vibrant outdoor pedestrian mall Church Street Marketplace—a haven of fine dining, casual eateries, funky boutiques and national retail stores, street vendors and world-class people watching.

 Vermont Maple Festival

The Vermont Maple Festival, held in April, concludes the sugaring season celebrations.

Although the Festival takes place in St. Albans, it is a large event (more than 50,000 people attend annually) that is for all Vermont sugarmakers and guests to the State who are ready to enjoy the end of the sugaring season with three days of festivities for families and people of all ages.

Flynn Theater - Cirque Eloize: "iD"

A masterful performance that meets at the crossroads of comic books, science-fiction movies, and the rich universe of graffiti, Cirque Éloize’s latest spectacular, iD, is a place where one can seek refuge and express individuality within a surreal megalopolis. With 14 artists performing in 10 circus disciplines, Cirque Éloize discovers a new world based in the heart of a futuristic city that revolves around breakdance and hip-hop, directed by Jeannot Painchaud and choreographed by Mourad Merzouki of Compagnie Käfig. Backed by rock and pulsing electronic music and coupled with video projections, iD explores issues of identity in a decidedly visual culture that is playful, energized, youthful, and transcendent.

The Vermont Performing Arts League proudly presents its 18th Vermont International Festival, an annual celebration of cultures from around the world, bringing their crafts, foods, music and dance to our doorstep.

The 2010 Vermont International Festival will be held Friday, December 3rd through Sunday December 5th, at the Champlain Valley Exposition, Route 15/Pearl Street, Essex Junction, Vermont.  The Champlain Valley Expo has unlimited free parking, is on the CCTA bus line and is handicapped-accessible.

Come and enjoy our bustling international marketplace:

Whether you were running by Burlington’s waterfront, visiting to photograph beautiful fall foliage, or simply watching the news – you can't miss the 3rd Annual Giant Pumpkin Regatta & Festival.

Different teams of people (pumpkin sponsors, local celebrities, media personalities, PILOT students, etc.) race in giant hollowed out pumpkins (1,000lbs. +) on Lake Champlain. There is also a fun-filled family festival that includes local food vendors providing yummy fall treats, craft vendors, kids' activities, pie eating contests, and a fall inspired pet costume contest!

The Champlain Valley Exposition teams up with Vermont Public Television to present the Vermont Antique Fall Expo and Sale on Saturday, October 2 from 8:30 to 5 and Sunday, October 3 from 8:30 to 4 in Miller Expo Centre at the Champlain Valley Exposition, 105 Pearl Street in Essex Junction, Vermont.

Friday September 10th through Sunday September 12th, 2010

The Church Street Marketplace’s annual Marketfest, sponsored by Stowe Mountain Resort, runs from September 10th through September 12th. For these three days the Marketplace transforms into a lively and colorful street festival, offering some of the area’s greatest entertainment and shopping.

On Saturday, September 11th, dance in the street as the Swingin’ Vermont Big Band joins us again for this year’s Marketfest. Listen to jazz by the Pine Street Jazz Band, and later on in the day sing along with Rick and the Ramblers on the City Hall Block Stage or shake your hips to blues rock group Hey Mama on the Top Block Stage.

Sunday, September 12, features our annual Treasure Hunt at NOON on the Second Block of Church Street, right in front of April Cornell, a bounce castle, face painting, music by Mike Martin and Trio Gusto and a bevy of daring and magical street entertainers.

The Coca Cola Grandstand will be the site of some of the biggest names in entertainment at the Fair in 2010. On opening night, Lyle Lovett and his Large Band will take to the Comcast Stage to provide a unique musical kickoff for the Fair. Country music fans will have their day – and then some – on Sunday, Aug. 29, as the WOKO Country Club Music Festival offers an incredible lineup of artists over six hours. Headlining the festival is Trace Atkins, who is joined by top acts Aaron Tippin, Gwen Sebastian and Love and Theft during the afternoon. Local favorites Jamie Lee Thurston and Keegan Nolan will also appear. The Bud Light Music Series continues on Labor Day Weekend as teen sensation Justin Bieber will perform on Friday night, Sept. 3. On Saturday, Sept. 4, country superstar Keith Urban will be the headliner, joined by American Idol winner Kris Allen. The series finishes with comedian Bill Cosby on Sunday, Sept. 5. Tickets for all shows are available at the Flynn Box Office. Tickets purchased in advance include free gate admission to the Fair the day of the show. Treasures from the earth will be on display at the 31st annual Champlain Valley Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show the weekend of July 24th. The show, sponsored by the Burlington Gem and Mineral Club, is public and popular with adults and children alike, club Treasurer Warren Ellison of Underhill said. Of the 500 to 1,000 attendees, about 150 often are children.

Steve Howe of St. Albans is club secretary and newsletter editor. He said kids are inspired by minerals. It's the wonder of a specimen that might be millions of years old and that is still attractive and interesting," he said. The show will include activities for children. Three speakers Saturday and Sunday afternoons are collectors and authorities on geology and minerals in New England. Robert Whitmore will speak Saturday about "Gemstones of New England" and Sunday about "Pegmatites Around the World."

The Vermont Mozart Festival was founded in 1974 by Mel Kaplan, a Juilliard School of Music professor for 25 years and a well-known figure in the world of chamber music. Having recently moved to a farm in Charlotte, Mel was struck by the similarity of Vermont’s beauty to that of Mozart’s Austria and had the inspiration to conceive a festival in the European model: a variety of interrelated musical events in a variety of gorgeous settings.

his summer, from July 18th through August 8th, 2010, Vermont Mozart Festival will host 19 concerts and feature the music of Chopin, whose orchestral and solo works for piano will be brought to life by global talents Rieko Aizawa, Philippe Entremont, Jean-Francois Latour, Jean-Claude Pennetier and Gil Shohat.

Burlington's 4th of July Celebration will be taking place this Saturday, July 3rd on the Burlington waterfront. Festivities will begin at 5:30 including local bands, strolling entertainers, acrobats, stilt walkers, mines, jugglers, balloon twisting and pony rides. The fireworks are set to begin at 9:30. If you haven't seen the Burlington fireworks in the past, definitely attend this event. They put on a very good show!

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight activity that mobilizes communities across the country to celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the fight against cancer. This is an American Cancer Society signature event.

On Sunday, May 30th, runners will participate in the 22nd annual KeyBank Vermont City Marathon & Relay.

This community effort, recognizes all those who have had a hand in making the race a success for 22 years. From the runners to the volunteers to the crowds cheering on the sidelines, we all share the same desire to cross the finish line, now and in the future.

Sunday May 9th - Lund Family Center's Mother Day Bike Ride

On May 9th, ride to support the Lund Family Center which has provided 120 years of service to Vermont families providing services to over 4,000 people.

Choose to ride 10, 16, 30 or 55 mile routes with an additional 3.6 mile route for families with young children to ride along the bike path. Rides start between 8-10 am at Rice Memorial High School.

Annual COTS Walk - Sunday May 2nd

COTS - Committe on Temporary Shelter, Burlington VT
The Annual COTS Walk is a 3-mile trek around downtown Burlington starting from Battery Park, following the route a homeless person might travel to receive shelter and services. This is the one day of the year that we open our shelters to the community so people can see how their pledges are put to use. At 2pm, participants are led by the drummers of Sambatucada down the Church Street Marketplace along Main Street and into surrounding neighborhoods. Along the way, walkers are invited into COTS shelters to see COTS facilities "up close and personal." The walk takes 45 minutes to an hour and concludes back at Battery Park where walkers are met with music, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and other free refreshments.

Burlington Home Show - February 27th and 28th at Sheraton Hotel, Burlington, Vermont

The Burlington Home Show will be occurring this weekend at the Sheraton Hotel in Burlington, Vermont. This is the 15th year of the event which will have 200 exhibitors and will attract roughly 9,000 visitors. Show hours are 10-8 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. There is a $6 admission fee. The show will highlight many area builders, remodelers and local businesses ranging from new homes, log homes, remodeling options, landscape design, heating/cooling systems, windows, hot tubs, lawnmowers and more!


Magic Hat Mardis Gras - February 26-28, 2010, Burlington, Vermont

This weekend, Burlington Vermont will host the 15th annual Mardis Gras celebration. Events kick off on Friday night with a Masquerade Ball at the Radisson Hotel. Tickets are $12 in advance and $14 at the door.

On Saturday, festivities begin at noon on Church Street with the Festival of Thieves. The Parade begins at 3:00 with 40 floats tossing over 180,000 beads as well as 7,680 authentic Louisiana Moon Pies and thousands of Lake Champlain Chocolates. Over 12,000 people attended the parade last year. The Magic Hat Block Party will immediately follow the parade where top bands will play. Proceeds from bead sales will benefit the Women's Rape Crisis Center in Burlington. Last year, $5,000 was raised for the center from this event. Magic Hat had raised over $100,000 over a thirteen year time period for WRRC. The event is projected to bring 25,000 visitors over three days.

Penguin Plunge - Burlington Vermont to benefit Special Olympics of Vermont

 

Penguin Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics in VermontSpecial Olympics event in Burlington Vermont

This Saturday, February 6th Burlington, Vermont will participate in the 15th annual Penguin Plunge to support Special Olympics of Vermont. This Burlington event has become well known from its start in 1995 with only 15 participants to a record 900 participants in 2009. This year should break all records with approximately 1,000 participants.  Jump into the icy waters of Lake Champlain to help support the 850+ Special Olympics athletes in Vermont. Donations will go towards providing the athletes with opportunities to participate in sports training and athletic competitions.

If you would like to participate in the Penguin Plunge, fundraising expectations are a $25 registration fee and a $150 fundraising minimum per participant.  This year, Special Olympics of Vermont hopes to raise $350,000 from the event.  You may click here to register.
